Why a GA1 inspection is mandatory
All work equipment must undergo mandatory testing and inspection under the Safety, Health and Welfare at Work (General Application) Regulations 2007. Insurance companies do not test your equipment in order to issue a GA1 Certificate of Compliance, so it is vital to use an experienced inspection company to confirm your plant is maintained and safe to use by law.

GA1 and plant inspection questions
- What is a GA1 inspection?
- A GA1 inspection is a thorough examination of lifting equipment, plant or machinery carried out by a competent person, recorded on the HSA's approved GA1 form (Report of Inspection) as required by the Safety, Health and Welfare at Work (General Application) Regulations 2007.
- Who needs a GA1 certificate in Ireland?
- Any employer or owner using lifting equipment, excavators, dumpers, teleporters, forklifts, quarry plant or marine lifting gear at work needs valid GA1 certification before the equipment is used.
- How often are plant inspections required?
- Most plant and machinery is inspected every 12 months. Lifting accessories and equipment used to lift people, along with quarry brake testing, are generally inspected every 6 months.
- Does my insurance company issue the GA1 certificate?
- No. Insurers do not test your equipment or issue a GA1 Certificate of Compliance. The inspection must be carried out by an experienced, competent inspection company such as L&M Plant & Inspection Services.
- Do you travel to site?
- Yes. This is a fully mobile service. Equipment is inspected at your own premises, site or quay, based in Castletownbere, Co. Cork and covering Cork, Kerry, Munster and the rest of Ireland.
